History
The city of White Sulphur Springs is located in the Greenbrier Valley of the Allegheny Mountains. The area was first settled in 1750 by German and Swiss immigrants. The town was originally named “Salt Lick Town” due to the large salt deposits found nearby. In 1778, the town was renamed “White Sulphur Springs” after the sulfur springs that were discovered in the area.
The White Sulphur Springs resort was established in 1778 and quickly became a popular destination for the wealthy and influential. Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and Jackson all visited the springs. In 1858, the Virginia Assembly voted to make White Sulphur Springs the permanent summer capital of the state.
The resort continued to grow in popularity and by the early 1900s, it was one of the largest and most fashionable resorts in the country. The arrival of the railroad in 1903 made it even easier for visitors to reach the springs.
The resort was at the height of its popularity in the 1920s and 1930s. During this time, celebrities such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Tallulah Bankhead, and Bing Crosby visited the springs.

History of White Sulphur Springs
White Sulphur Springs, Montana is a city in Meagher County, Montana, United States. The population was 1,131 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Meagher County.
The city was founded in 1864 as a mining town and named for the white sulphur springs near the town site. Mining dominated the economy until the late 19th century when the focus turned to agriculture. The city is now a center for ranching, wheat farming, and tourism.
The White Sulphur Springs National Fish Hatchery, located just outside the city, is the largest rainbow trout hatchery in the United States.
