The city of White Plains has a population of 58,853, according to the 2010 census. It covers an area of 11.6 square miles (30 km2), and its elevation is 383 feet (117 m).
The city was founded in 1683, and its name derives from the Spagnola family who owned the land at the time. The area was initially used as farmland, but the development of the city began in the late 19th century when the New York and Harlem Railroad laid tracks through the area. White Plains became a city in 1916.

History of White Plains
The city of White Plains is situated in southern Westchester County, New York. It is the county seat and commercial hub of Westchester, an affluent suburban county with a population of just over one million residents. White Plains is located approximately 20 miles north of midtown Manhattan and is a part of the New York metropolitan area.
The first known inhabitants of the area now known as White Plains were the Algonquin Native Americans. The Algonquins were a seminomadic people who lived in small villages throughout the northeastern United States and southern Canada. They subsisted mainly on hunting and gathering, but also grew crops such as corn, beans, and squash.
The first Europeans to settle in the area were the Dutch, who established the first permanent European settlement at Fort Nassau in 1614. The Dutch were soon followed by the English, who established the plantation of Westchester in 1639. Westchester was one of the first Dutch colonies in North America and quickly prospered.
The English Civil War (16421651) disrupted life in Westchester, as many of the colonists sided with the rebel forces against the English Crown. In 1646, the English Parliamentarians under the command of Sir Edmund Lawrence besieged and captured Fort Westchester from the rebel forces.
After the English Civil War, life in Westchester resumed its normal course. The English Crown granted the land to John Davies, an English nobleman, in 1661. Davies then renamed the plantation “White Plains” after the witness trees that dotted the landscape.
In 1776, the Battle of White Plains was fought just outside the city during the American Revolutionary War. The Continental Army, under the command of General George Washington, defeated the British Army, under the command of General William Howe. The British would go on to occupy New York City for the remainder of the war.
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, White Plains became an important stop on the Underground Railroad, a network of safe houses and routes used by enslaved AfricanAmericans to escape to freedom in the Northern states.
In the 20th century, White Plains developed into a sprawling suburban community. In 1911, the first shopping center in the United States, called The Green, was built in White Plains. In the 1930s, White Plains was selected as the site of the headquarters of General Foods Corporation. In the 1950s, White Plains saw a boom in residential construction, as families looking for spacious homes and good schools flocked to the suburb.
In recent years, White Plains has continued to grow and prosper. It is now home to a diverse population of nearly 60,000 people and is a vibrant and thriving community.
