History of Whitchurch
Whitchurch is a small market town in northern Shropshire, England. It is the administrative centre of the borough of the same name and had a population of 12,065 at the 2011 census.
Whitchurch was founded in the 6th century by the Saxons. It is thought that the name ‘Whitchurch’ comes from the Saxon ‘hwicce’ meaning ‘ dairy farm’. In 1086, the Domesday Book records that the manor of Witenordesset belonged to Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Arundel. The Earl gave the manor to the monks of St. Werburgh’s Abbey in Chester for their prayers on his behalf.
The Abbey held the manor until the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century when it passed to the Crown. The manor was then leased to various tenants until it was finally sold to Sir Thomas Myddelton in 1628.
The Myddelton family were huge landowners in the area and their influence can still be seen today. They built the almshouses and the clock tower in the Market Square. The family also owned the flour mill which was powered by the River Dee.
Whitchurch was an important coaching town in the 18th and 19th centuries. The main route from London to Holyhead passed through the town and there were over 30 coaching inns. The coaching inns were used not only by travellers but also by stagecoach operators carrying goods and mail.
The coming of the railways in the 19th century brought an end to the coaching trade and many of the inns were converted into private houses.
Whitchurch was also an important market town and the weekly market and annual fair were both wellattended. The market was held in the Market Square which was also used for public executions until 1822.
Until 1974, Whitchurch was an urban district in the administrative county of Shropshire. It then became a part of the new county of Hereford and Worcester. In April 1998, Hereford and Worcester was abolished and Whitchurch became part of the new county of Shropshire.
