The name Whiston is AngloSaxon in origin and means ‘Farm on the white stone’. The white stone is most likely to be the gritstone which is prevalent in the area. The first record of the name is in the Domesday Book where it is spelt ‘Witestan’.
The parish church of St. Mary’s dates back to the 12th century and is a Grade I listed building. The church was remodelled in the 15th century and parts of it date back to the Norman period.
Whiston manor was owned by the de Whiston family from the 12th century until the early 17th century when it was sold to the Earls of Shrewsbury. The manor house was demolished in 1779.
The village was bypassed by the A57 road in 1965.
In 1974, the village was transferred from the county of Yorkshire to South Yorkshire.
