Other notable historic buildings in Wheeling include the WheelingPittsburgh Steel Building, originally built in 1908, and the West Virginia Independence Hall, which served as the state’s capital building from 1861 to 1863.

History of Wheeling
It is with great pleasure that we introduce to you the City of Wheeling. Our city has a diverse and interesting history that includes being the first city in the Northwest Territory, the birth place of Memorial Day, home to the first state capital west of the Appalachian Mountains, and the site of the largest outdoor drama producer in the United States. Wheeling was also the first city in the United States to use aluminum to build a bridge.
The city got its start in 1769 when a company of surveyors from Virginia arrived at the confluence of the Wheeling Creek and Ohio River. The area was inhabited by the Shawnee and Delaware Native American tribes. The name “Wheeling” is thought to come from an Native American term that means “place of the head.”
In 1770, construction of Fort Fincastle began. It was later renamed Fort Henry in honor of Patrick Henry. In 1774, the Wheeling area was claimed by both Virginia and Pennsylvania. The matter was solved the following year when Virginia agreed to relinquish its claim on the land in exchange for 10,000 acres (40 km2) of land in the Shenandoah Valley.
In 1777, the Articles of Confederation were ratified at Fort Henry, making Wheeling the first city in the Northwest Territory. On October 11 of that year, the Wheeling Convention met and declared independence from Britain. George Washington was in attendance.
On July 1, 1861, Wheeling was admitted to the Union as a part of the state of West Virginia. The city served as the capital of the Restored Government of Virginia from 18611863.
During the American Civil War, Wheeling was a Union stronghold and served as a major supply base and hospital center. A total of 26 fortifications were built to protect the city.
In 1863, the West Virginia Constitutional Convention convened in Wheeling. The city was also home to the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, which was the first bridge to span the Ohio River and the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time of its completion in 1849.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Wheeling became known as a hub of industry. The Norton Company, which specialized in abrasives and grinding wheels, was founded in Wheeling in 1885. The WheelingPittsburgh Steel Corporation was also headquartered in the city.
In recent years, Wheeling has undergone a economic and cultural renaissance. The city’s downtown area has been revitalized and is home to a number of shops, restaurants, and galleries.
