History of West Orange
West Orange is a city located in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city’s population was 46,207, making it the 62ndmost populous municipality in the state. West Orange was initially a part of Newark township, and remained so until November 27, 1806, when Orange was incorporated as an independent town. On April 13, 1807, the first government was elected. On January 31, 1860, Orange was incorporated as a city. Almost immediately, Washington Street was extended from Newark to the Morris Canal.
The main routes through the city are the Garden State Parkway (exit 145), I280 (exit 7A), and Route 21. I280 goes from the Eisenhower Extension (I95) in Newark through the city to Livingston. The Garden State Parkway begins at its southernmost point at interchange 145 in West Orange, just past Exit 14 of the New Jersey Turnpike, and heads north towards Suffern, New York. US Route 1/9 run along the eastern border of the city. State Route 506 (Mt. Pleasant Avenue) also runs through the city.
The West Orange Public Library consists of the Main Library and the North Branch Library. In 1884, members of the Fortnightly Club of West Orange formed the West Orange Library Association. In October 1884, they opened a library in a room in the Crane Building on Main Street. In 1895, the Association boulder a new twostory brick building on the corner of Main and Mount Pleasant Avenues. In 2014, the library completed a $4 million expansion and renovation project that added more than 6,000 square feet of public space to the Main Library.
The West Orange schools system serves students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. The district is made up of seven elementary schools (k5), three middle schools (68), and two high schools (912). As of the 201415 school year, the district and its 12 schools had an enrollment of 5,914 students and 467.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 12.7:1.
The first free public school in New Jersey was established in West Orange in 1804. The first school building was erected in 1811 on the current location of Liberty Middle School. When Orange was incorporated as a town in 1806, the school became part of the town government. In 1810, the town appointed its first Board of Education. In 1866, the state legislature WOA002: History of West Orange, NJcreated the board of education as a separate entity.
West Orange High School was established in 1876. In September 1885, the township’s second high school, East Orange High School, opened. In 1957, the two high schools were merged to form West Orange High School.
The FIRST Robotics Competition Team #522 “The Steel Spartans” of West Orange High School won the MARVice regional competition in 2006. The team ranked fifth in the world out of 535 teams at the 2006 Championships in Atlanta, Georgia.
