History of West New York
West New York is a town in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the town’s population was 49,708,[10][11][12] reflecting an increase of 3,940 (+8.6%) from the 45,768 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 7,642 (+20.0%) from the 38,126 counted in the 1990 Census.[21] West New York is situated on the western shore of the Hudson River, opposite Manhattan, in the northeastern corner of Hudson County.
Historically, much of the town was part of the Town of Bergen, one of the original four townships created in 1683. It became part of Hudson County in 1840, as North Bergen Township. In 1843, it was renamed West Bergen and eventually evolved into the town it is today. It was incorporated as a town in 1898. The town’s major ethnically diverse immigrant groups included Germans, Irish, Italians, and Swedes—all of which contributed greatly to the town’s economy and culture.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, West New York had one of the highest concentrations of European immigrants in America.[22] The multitude of ethnic groups are reflected in the town’s street names. Many of the streets are named after places in Europe, including a number of English towns (Oxford Street, Cambridge Avenue, etc.).[23] Some streets are named after American Indian tribes (Siwanoy Avenue, Mohawk Avenue, Seneca Place, etc.).[24]
The town was once the home of the West New York Dodgers, a minor league affiliate of the Brooklyn Dodgers, until 1957 when the franchise was transferred to Vero Beach, Florida.
The town is notable for being the first municipality in the United States to elect an allfemale cabinet, as well as the first municipality to have a female mayor, Blanche K. Bruce, in 1899.[25]
West New York is located on the west bank of the Hudson River, opposite Manhattan, in the northeastern corner of Hudson County, New Jersey.[26][27] The town is bounded by the cities of Hoboken and Union City to the south and east, and Guttenberg to the north. According to the 2010 United States Census, the town had a total area of 0.979 square miles (2.54 km2), including 0.935 square miles (2.42 km2) of land and 0.044 square miles (0.11 km2) of water (4.46%).[1][2]
The southern and eastern portions of town are in the Hudson Palisades, a line of steep cliffs that rise sharply from the Hudson River waterfront.[28] The northern limits of the town fall within the Hackensack Meadowlands.[29]
