History of West Des Moines
In the late 1800s, West Des Moines was nothing more than farmland on the western edge of the state’s capital city. The first residents were French and Belgian immigrants who worked the land. They were followed by Germans, Swedes, Irish and Italians, attracted to the area by the promise of jobs in the city’s growing industries.
The city was officially incorporated in 1902, with a population of just over 3,000. By this time, it had started to grow more rapidly, thanks to the construction of a streetcar line connecting it to downtown Des Moines. The city continued to expand in the early 20th century, annexing land and adding new neighborhoods.
The postWorld War II years brought more growth, as veterans returned home and started families. New subdivisions sprung up, and the city’s population grew to over 30,000 by 1960.
Today, West Des Moines is one of the state’s largest cities, with a population of over 60,000. It is a thriving community, with a strong economy, diverse population, and plenty of things to do. It is also home to some of Iowa’s best schools, parks, and recreation facilities.
