History of West Chester
West Chester is a city located in southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. The population was 18,461 at the 2010 census. The United States Office of Management and Budget lists West Chester as the 610th borough in the United States.
West Chester is the county seat of Chester County. The city was established in 1799, and was incorporated as a borough on February 10, 1835. The city has been the site of a number of historical events.
In 1777, the Battle of Brandywine was fought just north of West Chester. In September 1777, the British Army occupied Philadelphia and the American Continental Army camped at Valley Forge, about 27 miles (43 km) northwest of West Chester. On June 28, 1778, West Chester was the site of a Continental Army muster. In October 1779, George Washington stayed at Mrs. Lydia Darragh’s inn on Chestnut Street while the Continental Army camped at nearbyPaoli.
In 1780, troops from both sides of the conflict bivouacked around West Chester. On June 24, 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed, officially ending the American Revolution.
In 1800, the West Chester post office was established. In 1837, the first issue of the Daily Local News was published. In 1849, the Pennsylvania Railroad built itsMain Line west of the borough.
On April 3, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln visited Chester County, and spent the night at the Elliott House in West Chester.
On May 10, 1869, West Chester was the site of the first women’s rights convention to be held in Pennsylvania.
On September 26, 1861, the first major battle of the American Civil War, the Battle of ChANTILLY was fought just north of the borough.
In the early 20th century, West Chester became home to several fraternities and sororities, including the future site of West Chester University.
In 1925, the community was hit by one of the most devastating floods in its history. The Chester Creek, which runs through the center of town, overflowed its banks, causing extensive damage to homes and businesses.
In the late 20th century, West Chester served as the headquarters for the Scott Paper Company. In 2001, the company was acquired by KimberlyClark.
