West Bromwich is a town in the West Midlands, England. It is the administrative centre of the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell and part of the Black Country. Historically part of Staffordshire, at the 2011 census it had a population of 159,483. West Bromwich is 5 miles (8.0 km) northwest of Birmingham, 8 miles (13 km) from Wolverhampton and has a history dating back to the 9th century. It has been a market town since the Middle Ages, when it grew due to the market charter granted by King Henry I in 1168.
The town’s name is derived from “Broecham”, meaning “border village/town”, and “wic”, meaning “burgh/settlement”. The ‘wich’ part of the name was dropped in 1974.
West Bromwich was first mentioned as a village in the Domesday Book of 1086, though it is believed to have existed a few years earlier. It is an ancient market town, with market charters granted by King Henry I in 1168 and again in 1227.
The market square is on High Street, where many original sandstone buildings can be seen. The sandstone used for these buildings was quarried in the village of Wilden, now a suburb of West Bromwich. West Bromwich has been a market town since the Middle Ages.

History of West Bromwich
West Bromwich is a town in the West Midlands, England. Historically part of Staffordshire, it is 6.4 miles (10.3 km) west of central Birmingham. It is the administrative centre of the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell and contains a proud heritage dating back almost a thousand years.
The Domesday Book of 1086 records the manor of West Bromwich belonging to William FitzAnsculf, its lord. Although there is evidence of earliersettlement in the town, like that of a Saxon farmstead on West Bromwich High Street, the town as it is known today began to take shape in the 12th century. By the late 13th century, the town had grown to become an important market town selling wool and food, with weekly markets being held. In 1290, King Edward I granted a charter allowing a twiceweekly market and an annual fair to be held.
The town’s growth continued into the 15th century, with the building of New Street in 1421, and the establishment of a printing press in the town in 1473. By the 16th century, West Bromwich had become well known for its Iron industry, with the area’s first blast furnace being built in 1515. The town continued to grow rapidly during the Industrial Revolution, with the population increasing from around 5,000 in 1800 to over 85,000 by 1900.
During the 19th century, West Bromwich became a major centre for coal mining, with 29 collieries in operation at its peak. The town also developed a reputation for being a tough place to live, with a high crime rate and a reputation for violence. This was to change in the early 20th century, when the town became a center for car manufacturing. The Rover car company had a factory in the town from 1904 until 2005, when it was closed down.
