History of West Bend

West Bend is a city in Washington County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 31,078 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Washington County. The city is adjacent to the Town of West Bend. The Bend in the Milwaukee River is where the city got its name.

The first people to live in the West Bend area were Native Americans. The Menominee, Potawatomi, andHoChunk tribes were the first to call the area home. These tribes hunted, fished, and gathered food in the area. The Native Americans left the area as settlers began to move west.

The first settlers to arrive in West Bend were the Kemps. They built a log cabin near the Milwaukee River. Other families soon followed and the community began to grow. In 1845, the community was officially platted and named Washington. The name was chosen to honor George Washington.

In 1854, Washington County was created by the state legislature. The community of Washington was chosen as the county seat. The following year, the community’s name was changed to West Bend. The name change was made to reflect thecity’s location at the west end of the Milwaukee River bend.

West Bend continued to grow in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city’s first newspaper, The West Bend News, was started in 1875. The city’s first library was built in 1878. In 1886, the first hospital was built.
