History of West Allis
West Allis, Wisconsin is located in Milwaukee County and was founded in 1844. The city is named after Lyman Goodall, who built the first house in the area. Goodall was from New York and had come to the Milwaukee area in 1837 to work as a carpenter and farmer. In the 1850s, Goodall became the first postmaster of the city and the first mayor in 1861. He also helped to build the first school and church in West Allis.
The city grew slowly at first, but began to grow more rapidly in the 1870s when the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Western Railroad built a line through the city. This brought new jobs and businesses to the area and the population began to grow. By 1900, the population of West Allis was nearly 2,000.
The city continued to grow in the 20th century, reaching a population of over 60,000 by the 1970s. Today, the city is home to over 61,000 people and is a thriving community in the Milwaukee area.
