History of Wellsburg

The city of Wellsburg, West Virginia is located in Brooke County. The city was named after Sir Charles William Carey Wells, 12th Baronet of Goldenbrook Hall, who was a director of the Belmont Glass Works Company. The first settlement in the area that would become Wellsburg was made in 1770 by John McColloch. The town was officially established in 1771.

Wellsburg became an important stop on the National Road, which was the first federally funded road in the United States, connecting Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois. The road was authorized by Congress in 1806 and opened in 1818. Wellsburg was also an important stop on the Underground Railroad.

In 1849, the Brooke County Court allocated money to build a courthouse in Wellsburg. The current courthouse, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1854.

The citizens of Wellsburg were strongly divided over the issue of slavery and the Civil War. The town was occupied by Union troops in 1861 and by Confederate troops in 1862.

Wellsburg began to decline in the early 20th century, when the National Road was replaced by the Lincoln Highway and the production of glass shifted to other parts of the country. The population of the city peaked in 1910 at 3,964 and has been declining ever since. The population was 2,805 at the 2010 census.
