The town’s name is derived from the Welsh “wellfa,” meaning “water journey.” This is fitting, as the town’s early economy was based on maritime trade and fishing. Wellfleet’s harbor was a busy place in the 18th and 19th centuries, with ships coming from all over the world to trade goods.
