History of Welch

The city of Welch is located in McDowell County, West Virginia, and was founded in 1894. Welch was named after John D. Welch, a local coal company owner and the first mayor of the city. The city’s population grew rapidly in the late 1800s and early 1900s due to the coal mining industry.

In the early 1900s, Welch was the largest city in McDowell County with a population of over 10,000. However, the city’s population began to decline in the mid1900s as the coal mining industry declined. Today, Welch has a population of around 2,200.
