History of Wayne
Wayne is a city located in southeastern Michigan. It is the county seat of Wayne County and is situated about 19 miles west of downtown Detroit. The city was first settled by European Americans in 1824 and was incorporated as a city in 1869.
The area now occupied by the city of Wayne was originally home to the Potawatomi Native Americans. In 1809, the area was included in the territory ceded by the Potawatomi to the United States in the Treaty of Fort Wayne. In 1824, the first European American settlers arrived in the area, and a Post Office was established the following year.
The city was originally named “Waynesville” in honor of General Anthony Wayne, a hero of the American Revolution. The name was later shortened to “Wayne” in 1873.
During the Civil War, Wayne was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and several homes in the city were used as safehouses for fugitive slaves.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Wayne became a major manufacturing center in the Detroit area, due to its proximity to the city of Detroit and its status as a railroad hub. Wayne was also the site of the Wayne County Fair, which was held annually from 1854 to 1959.
