History of Wauwatosa
Prehistory
The first people known to have inhabited the area now known as Wauwatosa were the Mascouten, a subtribe of the Potawatomi. The Potawatomi were part of a confederation of Native American tribes that occupied what is now the Midwest. The Potawatomi spacious territory included the site of presentday Wauwatosa, whereas their main settlement was farther to the south and east in what is now Milwaukee.
The name “Wauwatosa” is a Potawatomi term meaning “firefly”. According to legend, the Potawatomi chief, Totosa, was given the name by the Menominee chief, Wauwateesa, after Totosa’s fireflythemed war paint.
19th century
The first EuroAmerican settlers arrived in the Wauwatosa area in the early 1830s, after the US government had forced the Potawatomi to cede their land in the Midwest in the Treaty of Chicago. These settlers were primarily farmers of English, Welsh, Irish, and Dutch descent. The vast majority of these settlers were Protestants, and many of them were active in the temperance movement.
One of the first settlers was Alonzo Slocum, who built a cabin on what is now known as Slocum Lake, in the southwest corner of Wauwatosa. Slocum later donated this land to the city for use as a park.
In 1836, the first school in Wauwatosa was built on this same land. It was a oneroom log cabin, and its first teacher was Mr. Davis, who was also the only male teacher in the district.
The first church in Wauwatosa was organized in 1837, and the first hospital was built in 1841.
The first post office in Wauwatosa was established in 1846.

20th century
The early 20th century was a period of growth for Wauwatosa. The population more than doubled between 1900 and 1910, from 5,365 to 11,508. This growth was due in large part to the arrival of several new industries in the city, including the Wisconsin Chair Company, the American Malting Company, and the Wisconsin Stamping Company.
The city’s first sewage treatment plant was built in 1902.
In 1911, the first public library in Wauwatosa opened its doors.
In 1912, the first high school in Wauwatosa was built.
In 1925, the city’s first airport was established.
In 1927, the Milwaukee County Zoo opened in Wauwatosa.
In the 1940s, several new neighborhoods were developed in Wauwatosa, including Hart Park, Washington Heights, and Riverside.
The 1950s saw the construction of several new schools in Wauwatosa, as well as the opening of the Milwaukee County Medical Center, which is now known as the Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin.
