Watkins Glen State Park is located in the village of Watkins Glen, south of Seneca Lake in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The park features two large waterfalls, 19 other named waterfalls, and several natural and geological features. It was opened to the public in 1863 and was privately owned until 1906, when it was purchased by New York State.
The primary attraction of Watkins Glen State Park is the Gorge Trail, which follows a stream through the narrow glen over nineteen stone bridges and past many waterfalls, culminating in the 400foot (120 m) waterfall, Cavern Cascade. The Gorge Trail is open from late April through midOctober. A section of the Gorge Trail between the Upper and Lower Falls is closed in the early spring due to the danger of falling ice.

History of Watkins Glen
The Village of Watkins Glen, NY, is located at the southern tip of Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. It is in the Town of Dix in Schuyler County. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. The village is named after Dr. Samuel Watkins, an early pioneer and physician in the area.
Watkins Glen is most famous for its auto racing heritage and the Watkins Glen International race track, which has hosted the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the IndyCar Series, the United SportsCar Championship, and many other racing series since 1948. The village is also home to the Watkins Glen State Park, one of the most popular state parks in New York State.
The first recorded European explorer of the area was French Jesuit priest Father Isaac Jogues, who came through the area in 1642 while on a mission to the Mohawk Indians. The first permanent European settlement in the Watkins Glen area was established in 1770 by British Army Captain Samuel Cuyler. Cuyler built a log cabin just north of presentday Watkins Glen on the east side of Seneca Lake. Cuyler’s cabin became known as Cuyler’s Castle.
In 1788, Cuyler’s son Samuel Cuyler Jr. built a stone house just south of his father’s cabin. This house, known as Pioneer House, still stands today and is now a museum owned and operated by the Watkins Glen Area Historical Society.
The first settlers in Schuyler County were mostly of Scottish, Irish, and English descent. Many of them were veterans of the American Revolutionary War and of the War of 1812. In 1793, the village of Watkins was founded by Hermanus Wendell, a Revolutionary War veteran from Rhode Island. In 1827, the Erie Canal opened, making Watkins Glen a major shipping center for agricultural goods and lumber. The canal also helped to spur economic growth in the village and by 1832, the population had reached 500.
In 1842, the nowfamous Watkins Glen gorge was discovered by accident when local farmer Abraham Miller fell into the gorge while chasing his runaway cow. The gorge, which is now a national landmark, quickly became a popular tourist destination.
In 1857, the first New York State championship road race was held in Watkins Glen. The 6.2mile course ran along public highways and dirt roads through the village and surrounding countryside. The race was won by George Ward in a time of 33 minutes and 21 seconds.
In 1906, the first hotel specifically catering to tourists, the Watkins Glen Hotel, was built in the village.
In 1918, the first auto race was held on the streets of Watkins Glen. The sixmile course ran through the village and surrounding countryside. The race was won by Jimmy Murphy in a time of 10 minutes and 8 seconds.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Watkins Glen became known as the “Mecca of Motorsports” due to the success of the Watkins Glen Grand Prix and the popularity of the Watkins Glen International race track.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the village of Watkins Glen went through a period of economic decline as the popularity of auto racing waned. However, in the 1990s, the village began to experience a resurgence as the popularity of auto racing, and the Watkins Glen International race track, began to increase.
