Wath upon Dearne is a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, in South Yorkshire, England. Historically within the West Riding of Yorkshire, it lies on the River Dearne, west of Barnsley and southeast of Rotherham. At the 2011 Census, the town had a population of 18,363.
The town’s name is cognate with that of the River Dearne, deriving from the Old English dèor, ‘wild beast’, and ærn, ‘stream’. A market charter was granted by King Henry III in 1257, and Wath became a market town. The market cross in the town centre dates from the 15th century. Until the 19th century, the River Dearne was navigable to barges as far as Stainborough, two miles upstream.
The coal industry dominated the town throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, with nine collieries in operation at one time. With the decline of the coal industry in the region, the last pit in Wath closed in 1986.
The former coal mines have left a legacy of old mine workings and tips, some of which have been reclaimed for nature conservation. The Dearne Valley Park running through the town is one such example, with over 2000 acres of countryside including grassland, wetland, woodland and derelict sites. The park has been restored from former coal mine workings, and now includes country parks, nature reserves, walking and cycle trails.
Wath upon Dearne is home to several schools, including Wath Academy which was previously known as Wath Grammar School, and was one of the first state grammar schools in England.

The first known settlement on the site was a 7thcentury Saxon village. The name “Wath” is derived from the Old English wætha, meaning “a ford”, referring to a crossing point on the River Dearne. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the village as Wathe, with a population of around 100. By the 13th century, the village had grown to become a town, and in 1297 it was granted a charter by King Edward I.
In the 18th century, the town became an important industrial centre, with coal mining and textile production being the main industries. The town’s population grew rapidly, reaching a peak of over 10,000 in the early 20th century.
Today, WathuponDearne is a thriving market town, with a selection of shops, restaurants and cafes. The town’s Market Place is home to a weekly market, which has been held since 1297, making it one of the oldest markets in England.
