Washington is a town in Tyne and Wear, England, on the River Wear, about 40 miles (64 km) east of Newcastle upon Tyne and 8 miles (13 km) southwest of Sunderland. Historically part of County Durham, in 1974 it became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead. Washington was designated a new town in 1964 and became part of the Tyneside conurbation.
Founded by the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1339 on the site of the present St. Peter’s Church, it was the first settlement in what would become the County of Tyne and Wear. Washington F.C. played at Eden Park, then the home of Sunderland A.F.C., until they moved to the Stadium of Light in 1997.
Perched atop a high hill in the center of town is Washington Old Hall, the ancestral home of the first president of the United States, George Washington. The hall, a Grade I listed building, is surrounded by acres of beautiful gardens which are open to the public. Visitors can also enjoy stunning views of the Wear valley from the hall’s elevated position.

History of Washington
Washington is a small town and civil parish in Tyne and Wear, England. It is situated on the River Wear, about 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Sunderland and 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Newcastle upon Tyne. Washington was formerly part of County Durham, but became part of Tyne and Wear in 1974.
The history of Washington can be traced back to the 12th century, when the Bishop of Durham granted a charter for a market town to the Norman lord, William de Wessington. The original market cross can still be seen in the town centre. The town developed slowly and by the 17th century, it was still little more than a village. However, the discovery of coal in the area led to a period of growth in the 19th century. Washington New Town was established in 1964 and this led to a further expansion of the town.
Today, Washington is a thriving community with a population of around 67,000. The town has good transport links and is home to a number of businesses and amenities.
