History of Washington (North Carolina)
Founded in 1770, Washington, North Carolina is the county seat of Beaufort County. The city is located on the Pamlico River, just upstream from its confluence with the Tar River. It has a population of 9,744 people (as of 2016), and is the principal city of the Washington, North Carolina Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The early history of Washington is closely tied to the history of the Pamlico River region. The Pamlico Indians were the first known inhabitants of the area, and their settlements lined the river. European explorers first arrived in the area in the early 1500s, but it was not until the early 1600s that any serious attempts at settlement were made.
In 1663, the English crown granted the Province of Carolina to eight Lords Proprietor. In 1707, the Province of Carolina was divided into two colonies, North Carolina and South Carolina. Washington fell within the boundaries of North Carolina.
In 1712, the town of Bath was established as the first permanent English settlement in North Carolina. However, due to its location on the Pamlico Sound (which made it vulnerable to attack from pirates), Bath was not successful. In 1722, it was destroyed by a hurricane, and the settlers abandoned it.
In 1733, another town, New Bern, was established upstream from Bath. It quickly became the most important settlement in the colony, and served as the colonial capital from 1743 until 1766.
In 1764, construction of a third town, Tryon (later known as Charlotte), began. Tryon was initially intended to be the new colonial capital, but the town was not completed until after the outbreak of the American Revolution.
During the Revolution, the majority of the people in North Carolina supported the Patriot cause. However, there were also a significant number of Loyalists, who remained loyal to the British Crown. Washington, being located in the coastal region of the state, was a hotbed of Loyalist activity.
In 1781, a major battle of the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Toano, was fought near Washington. The Patriots were victorious, and the Loyalists were forced to flee the area.
After the war, Washington slowly began to grow. In 1788, it was designated as the county seat of Beaufort County. In 1791, it was incorporated as a town.
In 1808, Washington was named the district seat of the newly created Pamlico District. In 1810, it was renamed WashingtononthePamlico in order to avoid confusion with the state capital, Raleigh.
In 1847, the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad was completed, with a stop in Washington. This helped to spur economic growth, and by 1860, the population had reached 2,600.
During the Civil War, Washington was a key supply center for the Confederacy. It was also the site of a major Union victory in 1865, the Second Battle of Fort Fisher.
After the war, Washington began to grow again. In 1875, it was chartered as a city. In 1896, it was connected to the rest of the country by the completion of the Washington and Vandemere Railroad.
Today, Washington is a thriving small city. It is home to a number of historical sites, including the birthplace of Andrew Jackson, the first President from North Carolina. It is also home to a vibrant arts community, and is a popular destination for tourists.
