History of Warfield

Warfield is a village in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, in the county of Berkshire. The village is situated 3.5 miles (5.6 km) east of Ascot, 5.5 miles (8.9 km) southwest of Maidenhead and 23.5 miles (37.8 km) west of London. The name Warfield means “open field by the weir”.

The village has a population of 2,580. The parish church is All Saints’, which dates from the 13th century and is a grade I listed building. Warfield Hall was built in 1679, and is now a grade II* listed building.

The village was first mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086, when it was called Wellefelle. At that time, the manor was owned by Odo, Bishop of Bayeux. The manor then passed through various hands until it was bought by Sir William Ridgeway in 1554.

Sir William’s grandson, Sir Thomas Ridgeway, built Warfield Hall in 1679. The Hall was bought by the Prince Regent in 1786, and has since been owned by various members of the royal family, including King George V, King Edward VIII and King George VI.

The village was used as a filming location for the television series Midsomer Murders and the film The Hound of the Baskervilles.

In the early 21st century, Warfield was ranked as the 33rd richest village in the UK, with an average house price of £1.3 million.
