History of Walsenburg
Walsenburg was first settled in the early 1870s. At that time, it was just a small mining camp. However, soon after its founding, the town began to grow. By 1874, there were about 500 people living in Walsenburg. The town continued to grow throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. In fact, at its peak, Walsenburg had a population of over 10,000 people.
The town’s early history is closely tied to the coal mining industry. The first mines in the area were opened in the early 1870s. For many years, coal was the main source of income for the town. In fact, at one time, Walsenburg was known as the “Coal Capital of the World.”
