History of Wailuku

The town’s history is deeply entwined with that of Maui itself. Wailuku was once the seat of the Hawaiian government and was an important center of the whaling industry in the 19th century.

The history of Wailuku begins with the founding of Maui by the Polynesian explorer Maui Loa. According to legend, Maui Loa sailed from Samoa in his canoe, the Mo’okini. He stopped at various islands along the way, including Tahiti and Hawaii. On Hawaii, he met and fell in love with a woman named Hina. Maui then brought Hina back to Samoa with him, where she gave birth to their son, Maui Loa II.
In 1778, Maui Loa II led a group of Polynesians from Samoa to settle on the island that would come to be known as Maui. They landed at the site of presentday Wailuku and established a village called Wailuaiki. Wailuaiki means “freshwater bay” in Hawaiian.
The early years of Wailuku were marked by conflict. In 1795, Kamehameha I, the king of Hawaii, invaded Maui in an attempt to conquer the island. The invaders were defeated in the Battle of Kepaniwai, which took place near Wailuku.
