History of Wahpeton
Wahpeton is a city in Richland County, in the southeastern corner of North Dakota, United States. The population was estimated at 7,716 in 2019, making it the eleventh largest city in North Dakota. Wahpeton was the first capital of Dakota Territory. It is the county seat of Richland County and home to Wahpeton High School, North Dakota State College of Science and Breckenridge Memorial Hospital.
The city was established in 1869 at the confluence of the Bois de Sioux and Otter Tail rivers, where they form the Red River of the North. The name “Wahpeton” is derived from the Dakota language, meaning “leafy place” or “to dress in leaves”. The historic Wahpeton Burr Oak Log Cabin, built in 1869, is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Dakota Territory was created by the US Congress in 1861, with the southern part including presentday North and South Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. Bismarck was designated as the capital in 1883. Wahpeton was the first territorial capital from 1861 until 1863, when it was moved to Yankton.
