History of Wabash

Wabash is a city located along the Wabash River in Wabash County, Indiana, United States. The population was 11,743 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Wabash County. It is notable as being the first electrically lighted city in the world, which was inaugurated on March 31, 1880.

Early history

The area around Wabash was inhabited by various Native American tribes before the arrival of European settlers. French explorers first settled in the area in the late 17th century and named the river after the Miami tribe’s name for the river. The Wabash post office was established in 1834. The city was named after the Wabash River, which flows through the city.

The Miami tribe had a longstanding presence in the area. In 1679, Francois and Louis Jolliet, the Sieur de La Salle, were the first Europeans to travel down the Wabash. They claimed the river for the King of France. Sieur de Vincennes built a fort on the Wabash River in 1702. In 1715, Sieur de Vincennes was captured and taken to Algiers, leaving the fort in control of the Miami tribe. The Miami regained control of the fort, which they maintained until 1747.

In 1750, the French ceded the Indiana Territory to the British. The British controlled the area until the American Revolutionary War. The Americans took control of the area in 1779 and established Fort Harmar, which was located near the presentday city of Marietta, Ohio. The fort was named after Colonel Philemon Harmar, the commander of the American troops in the area.

The area around the fort became known as the “Harmar District.” In 1784, a treaty was signed between the United States and the Miami tribe that ceded much of Indiana to the United States. The Miami tribe retained control of a small portion of land in what is now Grant and Wabash counties. The tribe sold the land in the Wabash District to the United States in 1809.

The first white Settlers in the Wabash District were Henry Dart and George Snyder. They arrived in 1816 and built a cabin near the presentday city of Converse, Indiana. Dart and Snyder were soon joined by other settlers, who began clearing the land and farming.

The area around Wabash was formally organized as Wabash County in 1835. The city of Wabash was platted in 1837 and officially incorporated as a city in 1840. The first mayor of Wabash was Jonathan Niblack, who was also the city’s first postmaster.

The Wabash and Erie Canal

The Wabash and Erie Canal was a canal that was built in the early 1800s to connect the Great Lakes to the Ohio River. The canal ran from Toledo, Ohio to Evansville, Indiana. Construction of the canal began in 1832 and was completed in 1843. The canal was 981 miles long and had 82 locks.

The canal helped to boost Wabash’s economy, as it made the city a major transportation hub. The canal also helped to spur growth in other industries in the city, such as milling and lumber. The canal was used extensively until the 1850s, when the invention of the railroad made transportation by rail more efficient.

The Civil War

Wabash was a strong supporter of the Union cause during the American Civil War. The city raised several regiments of soldiers to fight for the Union army. The 13th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry was mustered in Wabash in 1861 and saw action in several major battles, including the Battle of Shiloh and the Battle of Perryville.

The Wabash River was also an important transportation route for Union troops and supplies during the war. The river was patrolled by Union gunboats to prevent Confederate troops from crossing.
