History of Wabash
Wabash is a city located along the Wabash River in Wabash County, Indiana, United States. The population was 11,743 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Wabash County. It is notable as being the first electrically lighted city in the world, which was inaugurated on March 31, 1880.
Early history
The area around Wabash was inhabited by various Native American tribes before the arrival of European settlers. French explorers first settled in the area in the late 17th century and named the river after the Miami tribe’s name for the river. The Wabash post office was established in 1834. The city was named after the Wabash River, which flows through the city.
The Miami tribe had a longstanding presence in the area. In 1679, Francois and Louis Jolliet, the Sieur de La Salle, were the first Europeans to travel down the Wabash. They claimed the river for the King of France. Sieur de Vincennes built a fort on the Wabash River in 1702. In 1715, Sieur de Vincennes was captured and taken to Algiers, leaving the fort in control of the Miami tribe. The Miami regained control of the fort, which they maintained until 1747.
In 1750, the French ceded the Indiana Territory to the British. The British controlled the area until the American Revolutionary War. The Americans took control of the area in 1779 and established Fort Harmar, which was located near the presentday city of Marietta, Ohio. The fort was named after Colonel Philemon Harmar, the commander of the American troops in the area.
