History of Virginia City (Montana)
The first gold strike in Montana Territory was made in Virginia City on Alder Gulch in May 1863. The boom resulted in the establishment of Virginia City, Montana’s first permanent white settlement.
During the summer of 1863, prospectors fanned out across the western Montana Territory in search of precious metals. On May 26, 1863, a party led by Bill Fairweather and Henry Edgar discovered gold in Alder Gulch, a tributary of the Ruby River. Edgar and Fairweather panned for gold in the river and found “color” (flakes of gold) in their pan. News of the discovery spread quickly, and soon other prospectors and miners arrived in Alder Gulch.
By the end of June 1863, there were an estimated 1,000 miners working in the area. In July 1863, the town of Virginia City was established. The town was named after Virginia City, Nevada, which was itself named after the Virginia Mine in Storey County, Nevada.
Virginia City quickly became the largest town in the Montana Territory, with a population of over 10,000 by 1865. The town had a variety of businesses, including hotels, saloons, and stores. Miners in the area extracted $30 million worth of gold from the ground by 1868.
The city began to decline in the late 1860s, after the discovery of gold in Helena, Montana. By 1875, the population of Virginia City had declined to 3,000. Although gold mining continued in the area throughout the 20th century, Virginia City never regained its former prosperity.
