History of Vinita
Vinita, Oklahoma is a city in Craig County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 6,772 at the 2010 census, an increase of 12.7 percent from 5,972 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Craig County.
Vinita is notable as the first incorporated town in Indian Territory and the first capital of the Cherokee Nation after the United States removed them from the Southeast. The western terminus of the Frisco Railroad was located here from 1899 until it was extended to Tulsa in 1903.
Vinita used to be known as “Tahlequah on the Illinois”, due to its similar location on the Grand River (now known as the Verdigris River) as Tahlequah, the old Cherokee Nation capital in Indian Territory. The name is derived from vineta, the Latin word for wine.
The area that is now Vinita was settled by the Cherokee in the early 1800s. The first recorded settler was an Englishman named Levi Hawkens, who arrived in 1817. A blockhouse was built in 1818 to protect the settlers from attacks by the Osage.
A treaty between the Cherokee and the United States was signed in 1828, which stipulated that the Cherokee would move west of the Mississippi River. In 1832, the Cherokee National Council met at the home of Chief John Ross in Ross’ Landing, Tennessee (now Chattanooga, Tennessee) and voted to relocate the Cherokee Nation to Indian Territory. The community of Claremore, Oklahoma, was established as the new capital of the Cherokee Nation.
The Cherokee began moving into Indian Territory in 1834, and by 1839, most of the tribe had relocated to presentday Oklahoma. Claremore was designated as the capital of the Cherokee Nation in 1839. In 1841, the Cherokee National Council selected a site for a new capital near the Illinois River, and construction of a log cabin courthouse began. The town was originally called Hardesty, but was renamed Vinita in 1857.

In 1889, the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway (MK&T) built a track through Vinita, making it a busy railroad town. The MK&T also helped Vinita develop into a regional livestock center. The onset of World War I brought an influx of new residents to Vinita, many of whom were employed at the nearby army base, Camp Gruber.
The discovery of oil in the vicinity of Vinita in 1915 added to the city’s economic boom. The population of Vinita more than tripled between 1910 and 1920, from 2,185 to 6,797.
The Great Depression and the Dust Bowl of the 1930s took a toll on Vinita and the surrounding area. The population of Vinita declined sharply during this period, falling to 4,873 by 1940.
Despite the hardships of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, Vinita remained an important transportation hub for the region. The growth of the trucking industry in the 1940s and 1950s increased Vinita’s importance as a shipping and receiving center.
The population of Vinita began to grow again in the 1960s, and by 1970, the population had reached 6,067. The city continructures the main commercial center for Craig County and the surrounding area.
