History of Vincennes
Vincennes is a city in and the county seat of Knox County, Indiana, United States. It is located on the lower Wabash River in the southwestern part of the state, nearly halfway between Evansville and Terre Haute. Founded in 1732 by French Canadian settlers, Vincennes is the oldest continually inhabited European settlement in Indiana and one of the oldest cities west of the Appalachians.
The area that would become Vincennes was first settled by FrenchCanadian colonists in 1702. In 1732, Sieur de Vincennes led a group of about 30 settlers to the site, which he named Fort Sackville after the British governor of Canada, Sir William Sackville. The fort was built on the east bank of the Wabash River at a point known as the ” forks of the river,” where the Wabash (which flows north to south) meets the East Fork (which flows east to west).
The fort became an important trade post for the British, French, and Native Americans, and played a role in the French and Indian War (17541763). In 1763, after the war ended, the British took control of the fort and the area around it, making it part of the newlycreated colony of Quebec.
In 1778, during the American Revolutionary War, George Rogers Clark captured the fort from the British in a daring nighttime raid. The fort changed hands several times during the war, but was ultimately retained by the United States at the treaty of Paris in 1783.
In 1787, the Northwest Territory was created, and Vincennes became its first capital. The Indiana Territory was created in 1800, and Vincennes served as its capital until 1813, when the capital was moved to Corydon.
Vincennes remained an important regional center, especially for the river trade, throughout the 19th century. In 1889, the Wabash Valley Railroad was completed, further solidifying the city’s position as a key transportation hub.
Today, Vincennes is a small city with a population of about 18,000.
