History of Verwood
Verwood is a small town and civil parish in the English county of Dorset. The town is situated on the edge of the New Forest, about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of the port city of Southampton and 20 miles (32 km) southwest of the county town of Dorchester. The town has a population of 11,727 (2011 census), making it the largest of three towns in the East Dorset district, and the 18th largest settlement in Dorset.
The history of Verwood dates back to the Bronze Age. The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book as “Werda”, meaning “aClearing in the Weald”. It remained a small village until the early 20th century when it began to grow rapidly, largely as a result of the expansion of the nearby towns of Bournemouth and Poole. The growth of the town was further boosted by the arrival of the railway in 1885.
