History of Ventura
Ventura, officially the City of San Buenaventura, is the county seat of Ventura County, California, United States. The coastal site, set against undeveloped hills and flanked by two freeflowing rivers, has been inhabited for thousands of years. European explorers encountered a Chumash village, referred to as Shisholop, here while traveling along the Pacific coast. They noted that the local people enjoyed good health and had a settled community life with wellbuilt houses.
San Buenaventura was founded March 31, 1782, by Father Junípero Serra, at the direction of King Carlos III of Spain. It was the ninth of California’s 21 missions, and the last founded by Father Serra. The church was named for St. Bonaventure, a 13th century Franciscan saint. The town grew slowly around the mission, and for many years its largest building was the wooden, thatchedroof structure known as “El Palacio” that housed the local governor’s office, barracks, jail, and storerooms.
After the Mexican War of Independence ended in 1821, California became a Mexican province. Ventura was one of the first communities in California to be granted a land grant, in 1822. In 1834 Ventura underwent a drastic change when the Mission San Buenaventura was secularized, or deestablished, and all of the mission’s 10,000 acres (40 km²) of land were divided among the area’s ranchos.
After California became a state in 1850, Ventura continued to grow, incorporating as a city in 1866. sugars and other crops replaced cattle ranching as the area’s primary agricultural product, and oil was discovered in the 1890s. The city grew rapidly due to the boom, but was dealt a severe blow in 1933 when the Long Beach earthquake damaged many buildings and caused widespread panic.
The city recovered quickly from the disaster, and experienced further growth during World War II when the nearby military base of Point Mugu was established. Since the 1950s, Ventura has been characterized by slow but steady growth, and is today a largely middleclass community. Despite its suburban feel, the city still retains much of its smalltown charm, with a historic downtown, an active fishing pier, and a scenic coastline.
