History of Vancouver

Vancouver, Washington was founded in 1825 by Hudson’s Bay Company trappers and was named after Captain George Vancouver. The city was originally populated by the Chinookan people and was a part of the Oregon Country. The Lewis and Clark Expedition arrived in the area in 1806 and claimed the land for the United States.

In 1829, the U.S. Army built Fort Vancouver, which became the headquarters of the Hudson’s Bay Company operations in the region. The city grew around the fort and was incorporated in 1857. The arrival of the Northern Pacific Railway in 1884 made Vancouver a major transportation hub.

The early 20th century saw the establishment of several large industries in Vancouver, including meatpacking, shipbuilding, and lumber. During World War II, the city was a major military center, with two army bases and a naval shipyard.

Today, Vancouver is a thriving city with a diverse economy. Hightech industries, agriculture, and tourism are all important sectors. The city is also home to a major university and medical center.
