Uvalde is a city in and the county seat of Uvalde County, Texas, United States. The population was 15,751 at the 2010 census.
History of Uvalde
The city of Uvalde, Texas is located in southwestern Uvalde County. The city itself was founded in 1853 by John Crittenden Royal. The land for the city was purchased from the State of Texas for $1,500. The first post office in Uvalde was established in 1854.
The city was named after Juan de Ugalde, the governor of Coahuila y Tejas, who had led a successful campaign against the French in presentday Louisiana.
Uvalde rapidly became a center for trade and ranching. The nearby town of Rio Grande City served as a port for goods bound for north Texas.
By 1860, Uvalde had a population of over 500 people. The start of the Civil War in 1861 slowed the city’s growth, but it soon picked back up after the war ended.
In 1892, the InternationalGreat Northern Railroad bypassed the city of Uvalde, which hurt the city’s economy. In an effort to improve the situation, the city offered free land to the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway if they would build a line through Uvalde. The offer was accepted, and the railway was built in 1893.
The city continued to grow throughout the 20th century. In the 1960s, the city’s economy was diversified with the addition of a food processing plant and a clothing manufacturing company.
Today, the city of Uvalde is a thriving community with a population of over 16,000 people. The city is home to a number of businesses and industries, as well as a variety of schools and parks.
