History of Union City

Incorporated as a city in 1955, Union City is the product of several historical mergers. It was created when the cities of West Newark and Newark merged in 1955. Prior to 1955, both Newark and West Newark were separate municipalities. The history of Union City can be traced back to 1666 when the first European settlers, a group of Puritans from Connecticut, founded Newark. West Newark was founded in 1858.

The area now known as Union City was largely farmland until the mid19th century. The construction of the Erie Canal and the arrival of the Newark and Bloomfield Railroad in the 1840s spurred economic development and population growth in the area. In 1854, the residents of Newark voted to annex the area known as Enlightenment, which was then part of Belleville. This annexation increased the size of Newark by nearly onethird.

In the early 20th century, industrialization brought new jobs and growth to Union City. The city became known as the “Embroidery Capital of the United States” due to the large number of textile and garment manufacturers located there. These industries provided employment for thousands of residents, many of whom were immigrants from Europe.

The years after World War II were a time of transition for Union City. The oncethriving industries began to decline, and the population began to shifts from the city to the suburbs. In 1955, the decision was made to merge Newark and West Newark, creating the Unified City of Union City.

Today, Union City is a diverse, vibrant community with a population of over 66,000. The city is home to a variety of businesses and organizations, and its residents are involved in a wide range of activities. The Union City Museum of History and Art is dedicated to preserving and sharing the city’s rich history.
