Twin Falls is the county seat and largest city of Twin Falls County, Idaho, United States. It is the state’s tenth largest city. Twin Falls is the commercial center of the Magic Valley region of Idaho, as well as a educational center and transport hub. The city has manufacturing, retail, health care, and agricultural sectors.
He Shoshone Falls, commonly referred to as the Twin Falls, is a waterfall on the Snake River located in southern Idaho, United States. They are approximately 45 miles (72 km) southeast of Boise and are visible from much of the city of Twin Falls. They are a major attraction in the area and are one of the largest manmade waterfalls in the world.
Perrine Bridge crosses the Snake River Gorge just upstream from the Shoshone Falls. At 486 feet (148 m) it is the tallest bridge in Idaho and the fifth tallest in the United States. The bridge was completed in 1927 and was named for E.H. Perrine, who conceived and built it. The span allows for US Highway 93 to cross the gorge without the use of locks or dams, which had been used previously.
History of Twin Falls
Twin Falls, the county seat of Twin Falls County, is the largest city in Idaho’s Magic Valley region. The city had a population of 44,125 as of the 2010 census. Twin Falls is the largest city in a micropolitan area that consists of Jerome and Twin Falls counties and had 71,464 residents at the 2010 census. The city is 30 miles (48 kilometers) to the south of Jerome, just north of the IdahoNevada border along Interstate 84, and has become the retail and cultural center for southcentral Idaho and northcentral Nevada.
The center of economic activity in Twin Falls County is the city of Twin Falls. However, the economic impact of the city of Burley in Cassia County to the east is nearly as great. Together, these two communities comprise the regional trade area known as the Magic Valley.
The City of Rocks National Reserve is located along I84 about 60 miles (97 km) southeast of the city of Twin Falls in Cassia County.
The geology of the reserve includes one of the largest collections of batholiths in North America. The City of Rocks is also noted for its excellent opportunities for rock climbing and camping.
The name “Twin Falls” is derived from an earlier irrigation canal project in the area. In the early 1800s, part of the Snake River was diverted for irrigation use through Twin Falls, creating a waterfall.
The first permanent settlement in the area was Rock Creek Station, a stagecoach stop along the Oregon Trail. Rock Creek Station served as a rest stop for pioneers traveling along the trail. The first settlers in the area were primarily ranchers and farmers.
The City of Twin Falls was incorporated in 1905. The city’s population has grown rapidly since the early 1900s. The Twin Falls Canal Company began construction of an irrigation canal in 1892, which helped to spur the growth of agriculture in the area.
The Hansen Dam was constructed on the Twin Falls Canal in 1916. The dam was named for Julius L. Hansen, an early settler in the area and the first mayor of Twin Falls.
The Shoshone Falls, located on the Snake River about three miles (5 km) upstream from the city, are 182 feet (55 m) high—making them taller than Niagara Falls—and 900 feet (270 m) wide.
The Perrine Bridge, built in 1927, spans the Snake River Canyon just upstream from the Shoshone Falls. It is the only bridge in the United States that allows BASE jumping yearround without a permit.
In 1974, Evel Knievel attempted to jump the canyon on a rocketpowered motorcycle. Knievel crashed while attempting to land on the landing ramp, suffering serious injuries.
In September 1976, Johnny Knoxville, then a student at the University of Tennessee, attempted to bungee jump from the bridge. His cord was too long and he hit the canyon walls on the way down, suffering severe injuries.
In May 2014, an Base jumper died after his parachute failed to open properly.
