Tullahoma is a city in southcentral Tennessee, and the largest city in Franklin County. The population was 18,655 at the 2010 census. It is the principal city of the Tullahoma micropolitan area, which consists of all of Franklin County.

The city is home to campuses of both Motlow State Community College and Tennessee Wesleyan University. Camp Forrest, a U.S. Army training camp during World War II, is now a state park, and civil war reenactments are held periodically at ammunition bunkers on the site. Jack Daniel’s Distillery is located in Lynchburg, about 10 miles to the south.

Tullahoma was founded in 1852 as a planned city by entrepreneur Christopher H. Cowden, who sold lots for the new town. Its name reportedly derived from the Choctaw language, and means “red rock.” A spur of the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad was built through Tullahoma in the 1850s, and the town became a regional shipping center for livestock and grain. By the early 1900s, Tullahoma had grown to become one of Tennessee’s leading manufacturing cities, with companies such as the Rock Island Lumber Company and the Tullahoma Stave Company operating large plants here.

The city’s growth continued in the second half of the 20th century, with the construction of nearby I24 and the opening of the Arnold Air Force Base. Today, Tullahoma is a diverse city with a strong industrial base, a growing medical community, and a variety of cultural and recreational activities.
