History of Trinidad

Trinidad is a home rule municipality that is the county seat and the most populous city of Las Animas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,096 as of the 2010 census, up slightly from 9,078 in 2000. Trinidad is situated in the Purgatoire River Valley between the Sangre de Cristo and the Wet mountains. With an elevation of 6,034 feet (1,837 m), Trinidad is the highest incorporated city between Salida and Pueblo, Colorado.

Trinidad was first explored in 1540 by Spanish conquistador Antonio de Mendoza. He discovered coal deposits in the area and decided to mine them. However, it wasn’t until 1869 that coal mining began in earnest. In 1876, the Denver & Rio Grande Railway reached Trinidad, making it easier for miners to transport their coal to market. The town soon became an important coal mining center. At its peak, there were over 30,000 people living in Trinidad.

However, the coal mines began to close in the 1920s, and by the 1950s most had shut down. This led to a decline in the town’s population. Today, Trinidad is a much smaller city, but it still retains its historic character. The downtown area is filled with Victorianstyle buildings, and the city is home to several museums.
