History of Towson
Towson, MD, is a historic city located just outside of Baltimore. Founded in 1754, Towson is one of the oldest towns in Maryland and has a rich history.
One of the first settlers in the area was Henry Thompson, who built a log cabin on the site of presentday Dulaney Valley Road. Other early settlers included William and Jesse Rathbone, who established a tavern on York Road, and Joshua Gist, who helped build the Patapsco Bridge.
The town was officially founded in 1754 and named after its first constable, William Towson. The following year, Towson became the county seat of Baltimore County. In 1790, the town was laid out in squares according to a plan by Major Josiah Tatnall.
During the Civil War, Towson was a Union stronghold, and many of its residents served in the Union Army. After the war, the town began to grow rapidly, with the construction of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and the establishment of the State Normal School (now Towson University).
In the early 20th century, Towson was a suburban destination for Baltimore residents, with the construction of the Towson Trolley Line and the development of Downtown Towson.
Today, Towson is a thriving city with a vibrant downtown, a variety of shops and restaurants, and a rich history.
