History of Torrington (Wyoming)
In the late 1800s, Torrington was a stop on the Overland Trail and was known as the “Crossroads of the Plains.” The Union Pacific Railroad reached the area in 1867, and the first post office was established in 1868. The city was named for William Torrington, an early settler.
In 1886, the Dakota Territorial Legislature created Goshen County, with Torrington as the county seat. When Wyoming became a state in 1890, Torrington was one of the state’s first incorporated towns.
