The first settlers in the Titusville area came to the region in 1796, led by John Borden from New Jersey. Borden had purchased 4,000 acres (1,619 ha) of land in the Connecticut Western Reserve, which is presentday Ohio, with the intention of starting a settlement. The party stopped in western Pennsylvania to prospect for oil and gas, and struck oil near presentday Titusville.

Borden’s group built a small log cabin near Oil Creek, and continued to live there while they constructed a crude oil refinery. In 1803, the first barrel of ” Titusville crude” oil was produced. This spurred further development of the area, and by 1808 there were two oil refineries and a population of over 100.
