1. The Heidelberg University Campus

History of Tiffin
Tiffin is a city in and the county seat of Seneca County, Ohio, United States. Located about 50 miles (80 km) southeast of Toledo, it sits along the Sandusky River in the largest metropolitan area in Seneca County. Tiffin is the 19thlargest city in Ohio with a population of 17,963 people in the 2010 census. The National Arbor Day Foundation has designated Tiffin as a Tree City USA.
The first EuropeanAmerican settlers in the area were mostly from Virginia and Pennsylvania. They founded the village of Tiffin in 1812, and named it after John Tiffin, the governor of the Northwest Territory. The town soon prospered as a port on the Sandusky River, with access to Lake Erie. In 1817, Tiffin was designated as the county seat of newly formed Seneca County.
The original county courthouse was built in 1818, followed by a jail in 1821. Both buildings were located on the public square in the center of Tiffin. The county’s first newspaper, The Seneca Spectator, began publication in 1822. Tiffin was incorporated as a city in 1834, and underwent a period of economic growth during the 1850s and 1860s with the opening of several factories. The railroad arrived in Tiffin in 1854, carrying both freight and passengers.
The Civil War caused economic hardship in Tiffin, as many factories closed down due to a lack of raw materials and customers. However, the city recovered quickly after the war, and by 1870 its population had reached 5,913.
The early 20th century was a period of continued growth for Tiffin, with several new factories opening up and the population reaching 11,000 by 1930. The city suffered somewhat during the Great Depression, but not as badly as many other Ohio cities.
World War II also brought new industry to Tiffin, as several defenserelated factories opened up. The city’s population peaked at just over 18,000 in 1970.
Since then, Tiffin’s population has declined slightly, as many residents have moved to neighboring towns and cities in search of better jobs. However, the city remains a prosperous and vibrant community, with a diversified economy and a wide range of cultural and recreational activities.
