History of Thornbury
The first record of Thornbury is from 1084 when it was listed as having been bought by Nigel from Brictric. It remained in the hands of his family, the Stutevilles, until 1139 when it was captured by the Earl of Chester. The Earls held Thornbury for 14 years before it was regained by the Stutevilles. In 1254 Thornbury was again captured and this time was retained by the Earl of Chester until 1266 when it was returned to the Stuteville family. From 1266 until 1373 Thornbury changed hands a further four times, the last time being when the Duke of Lancaster gained possession of the castle and the town.
The castle was rebuilt in stone in the late 12th century, and despite changing hands many times, Thornbury Castle remained in a good state of repair. By the 16th century, Thornbury had become a market town and prospered until the 18th century when the castle was allowed to fall into ruin. The town also suffered at this time as the main road bypassed Thornbury, diverting trade elsewhere. Despite this, the 19th century saw Thornbury’s fortunes began to change with the coming of the railways. The Thornbury Branch Line was opened in 1873 and soon after Thornbury became a popular destination for tourists and daytrippers from Bristol and other nearby cities.
The 20th century saw Thornbury continue to grow, especially after the Second World War when many new housing estates were built on the outskirts of the town. Today Thornbury is a thriving market town with a Castle, Museum, and numerous shops, pubs, and restaurants. It is also home to a number of light industrial estates and is a popular commuter town for those working in Bristol and other nearby cities.
