History of Thibodaux
Thibodaux is a city in and the parish seat of Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, United States, along the banks of Bayou Lafourche in the northwestern part of the parish. The city’s population was 14,567 at the 2010 census. Thibodaux is a principal city of the Houma–Bayou Cane–Thibodaux Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The area was first inhabited by the Chitimacha people. The French colonized the area in the 18th century. The settlers named the area Thibodauxville after Major General Jacques Thibodaux (1769–1827), who was stationed there. The spelling was officially standardized when the city was incorporated in 1848.
One of the main crops produced in the area was sugar cane. The sugar industry was the main economic activity in the city for many years. A major adult education center is located in the city, along with Nicholls State University. The city is also the home of the Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival.
The area was settled in 17thcentury by French colonists. The name Thibodaux is from Major General Jacques Thibodaux of the Louisiana militia, after he defeated the Choctaw Indians in the Northwest Lafourche area. The spelling was standardized when the city was incorporated in 1848. Thibodaux was a Confederate stronghold during the American Civil War because of its proximity to Houma, a large cottonproducing parish, and its access to the bayous that led to the Mississippi River. Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard retreated to Houma after the Battle of Shiloh, and Union Admiral David Farragut occupied Thibodaux on September 13, 1862, but he left a month later.
On October 30, 1972, the city was hit by Hurricane Celia. The storm damaged several sugar cane crops and caused $10 million in damage to the city.
In 1986, oil was discovered in the city limits. Since then, the city’s economy has diversified with jobs in the oil industry, as well as in education, healthcare, and retail.
Thibodaux is home to 3 public high schools, Thibodaux High School, E.D. White Catholic High School, and Vandebilt Catholic High School. There are also several private schools in the area.
The city has two hospitals, Thibodaux Regional Medical Center and Ochsner St. Mary. Nicholls State University is located just outside of Thibodaux and is the only university in Lafourche Parish.
