History of The Village
The Village is a neighborhood in New York City, within Lower Manhattan. It is notable as a predominantly gay and lesbian neighborhood, and for its cultural diversity. The Village has been a center of the LGBT rights movement since the 1960s.
The Village is bordered by 14th Street to the north, Third Avenue to the east, Houston Street to the south, and the Hudson River to the west. Greenwich Village is roughly coextensive with the Greenwich Village Historic District, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965.
The Village is part of Manhattan Community District 2, which consists of seven neighborhoods in Lower Manhattan: Chinatown, Little Italy, the Lower East Side, the East Village, Greenwich Village, NoHo (which includes part of Greenwich Village), and the southern part of the Upper East Side, including Lenox Hill.
