History of The Dalles
The Dalles was established in 1805 as the last link in the Lewis and Clark expedition. The Discovery of the Columbia River by Lewis and Clark passed through The Dalles in October 1805. The Dalles served as a crossroads for many early explorers and settlers as they traveled west in search of new homes and opportunities. The Oregon Trail, the Mormon Trail, and the GutttentagMorgan Emigrant Trail all passed through The Dalles.
The Dalles was originally inhabited by the Wasco and Wishram tribes of Native Americans. The first white settlers in the area were fur trappers and missionaries. In 1811, the first permanent white settlement was established at Fort Astoria, just downriver from The Dalles. The Hudson’s Bay Company operated Fort Astoria until 1813 when it was sold to the North West Company. The North West Company operated the fort until 1821 when it was absorbed into the newly created Hudson’s Bay Company.
The Dalles officially became a city in 1857. The city grew rapidly during the early years of the 20th century as it became a major shipping point for wheat and wool from the surrounding agricultural areas. The construction of the Bonneville Dam in the 1930s brought new industry and economic growth to The Dalles.
