History of Ten Sleep

Ten Sleep is a town in Washakie County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 889 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Washakie County. The town is named for the ten nights that Native Americans slept on their journey along the Bighorn Trail.

The first known inhabitants of the area were the Crow Indians. They used the Bighorn Trail to travel from presentday Montana to hunt in the Big Horn Basin. The Crow called the area “P Pryor”, which translates to “red earth place”.

In 1868, the Washakie Treaty was signed between the United States and the Crow Nation. This treaty allowed white settlers to enter the area.

Some of the earliest settlers in the area were ranchers. They established large ranches and raised sheep and cattle.

Farming began to take hold in the early 1900s. The first irrigation ditch in the area was built in 1904.

The town of Ten Sleep was formally established in 1916. The town got its name from the ten nights that Native Americans slept on their journey along the Bighorn Trail.

The population of Ten Sleep began to grow in the 1920s and 1930s as more people moved to the area to farm and ranch.

The town continued to grow throughout the mid1900s. In recent years, the town has become a popular destination for outdoor recreation.
