History of Tandridge

The ancient parish of Tandridge in Surrey, England, was part of the hundred of Godley. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Tanrecde and Tangrede. The name is derived from the Old English words tūn and ōfer, meaning farmstead or estate on the high ground.

The Manor of Tandridge is thought to have been held by Odard, a follower of William the Conqueror. Odard’s grandson, William de Warenne, 1st Earl of Surrey, increased the size of the estate and built a motteandbailey castle. The earls of Surrey continued to hold the manor until the 14th century when it passed to the Fitzalan Earls of Arundel.

The parish church of St Nicholas was first mentioned in 1291 but was probably built in the 12th century. It was rebuilt in the 15th century and again in 1849.

In the 13th century, a weekly market and annual fair were granted by Henry III. The market was held on Tuesdays and the fair on the eve of St Nicholas’s Day (6 December).

In 1621, James I granted a charter for a market to be held on Wednesdays and a yearly fair on 23 April, the Feast of St George. The market rights were transferred to nearby Caterham in 1881.

The coming of the railways in the 19th century led to the growth of the village of Whyteleafe which developed around the station.

During the Second World War, two Chain Home AntiAircraft radar stations were built in the parish, one at Kenley and one at Woldingham.

Tandridge was part of the Coulsdon and Purley Urban District from 1933 to 1974. In 1965, the urban district was enlarged to include Godstone Rural District and Whyteleafe was transferred to the new London Borough of Croydon.

Today, Tandridge is a thriving district with a mix of rural and urban areas. It is a popular place to live, with good schools, transport links and leisure facilities.
