History of Swindon
Swindon is a town in Wiltshire, South West England. The town is located on the River Avon, close to the border with Gloucestershire. Swindon has a population of about 185,000 people.
The history of Swindon can be traced back to preRoman times. The town developed around a hilltop fort, which was occupied by the Romans from about 43 AD. The Roman name for the town was Sucidava. After the Romans left Britain, the town was occupied by the Saxons. The Saxon name for the town was Swindan ceastre, which means “the town on the winding river”.
In the 11th century, Swindon was a small market town. It was granted a charter by William the Conqueror in 1068. In the 13th century, Swindon became a stop on the Bath Road, a major route between London and Bristol. In 1788, the first Cornish miners arrived in Swindon to work in the local coal mines.
In the 19th century, Swindon experienced a period of rapid growth. This was partly due to the coming of the Great Western Railway in 1841.
