History of Swanage
Swanage is a town and civil parish in the south east of Dorset, England. It is situated at the eastern end of the Isle of Purbeck, approximately six miles (9.7 km) south of Poole and 25 miles (40 km) east of Dorchester. In the 2011 census the parish had a population of 9,601. Nearby are Bovington, Corfe Castle, Lulworth Cove, Wareham and Worth Matravers. Within the town are the subscribed Swanage Railway and the Swanage Museum and Heritage Centre.
The town was originally a small port and fishing village. During the Victorian era, it became a seaside resort. It has a sheltered bay and a safe beach near the heritage coastline with 18thcentury limestone cliffs. The town’s economy now depends on tourism.
According to the Swanage History website, the origins of the name Swanage are unclear. One theory is that the name originated from the Saxon word Swanwige meaning ‘swanhunting ground’. Another possibility is that it referring to the ‘scones’ that were made from the local Swan lifesaving team who hunted for food in 6th century.
The first record of Swanage dates back to the Domesday Book in 1086 where it is listed as Suanach and Suenecga. At this time it is thought that there were around 600 residents in the small village.
The main industry in Swanage for many years was fishing and the town had a busy herring industry. In the 1860s, Swanage was one of the largest fishing ports in England with over 100 boats sailing from the harbour. The arrival of the railways in the 19th century brought tourists to the town and Swanage soon became a popular seaside resort.
In 1901, the Population of Swanage was 3,541 and by 1911 it had increased to 5,349. By 1951, the population had reached 8,219.
The town council was formed in 1886 and Swanage gained urban district status in 1895. In 1974, Swanage became part of the Purbeck district of Dorset.
Swanage Bay is a wide, sweeping bay with high cliffs at Old Harry Rocks which mark the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site. The bay is popular with tourists and there are several sandy beaches which are perfect for swimming, sunbathing and surfing.
