Swadlincote is a town in Derbyshire, England. It is situated in the South Derbyshire district, to the west of Burton upon Trent and south of Derby. Swadlincote is the largest town in South Derbyshire, with a population of 28,754 at the 2011 Census.

The town is twinned with Alsfeld in Germany and Foix in France.

The town originated in the spoil heaps left behind by the local coal mining industry which began in the sixteenth century. In 1727 the first market was held, and by 1822 Swadlincote had become a sizable village with a population of 1,039.

The arrival of theAshbydelaZouch Canal in 1797 and the North Staffordshire Railway in 1848 resulted in further growth. With the collapse of the coal and clay industries in the mid20th century, Swadlincote’s economy declined sharply, although it has since diversified.

Although there are few buildings of architectural interest in Swadlincote itself, the nearby National Forest provides many opportunities for leisure and recreation. The area around the town is also notable for its limestone geology and there are several nature reserves in the vicinity.

Swadlincote is home to several museums, including the Sharpe’s Pottery Museum, which tells the story of the local pottery industry, and the Albert Village Museum, which is housed in a converted watermill. There is also an art gallery in the town centre.

History of Swadlincote

Swadlincote is a town in south Derbyshire, England. The town is the largest settlement in South Derbyshire, with a population of around 28,000 people. It is situated on the River Swadlin, and is surrounded by the towns of Burton upon Trent, AshbydelaZouch, Derby and Tamworth.

The area around Swadlincote has been inhabited for over 4,000 years. The first settlers were the Celts, who built hillforts in the area. One of these hillforts is Castle Hill, which is now a Scheduled Monument.

The Romans built a town called Swintonia on the site of modern Swadlincote. The town was situated on the Roman road known as Ryknild Street, which ran from Derbyshire to Leicestershire. Swintonia was an important stopping point on this road, and it is thought that the town may have had a market.

The town flourished during the Roman period, but was abandoned after the Romans left Britain in the 5th century.

The AngloSaxons settled in the area and built a new town called Swadlincote. This town was located on the site of the modern town centre.

The Normans built a motteandbailey castle at Swadlincote, which was destroyed during the Civil War.

The town grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution, and became a major centre for coal mining and clay extraction.

Today, Swadlincote is a thriving town with a variety of shops, restaurants and businesses. The town is also home to a number of cultural and historical attractions, including the Museum of Computing and the Swadlincote Picture House.
